11th Annual Happy Birthday Mr. Cage! – Special Event

September 15, 2011 ~ 7:30pm

cage birthday 2

“the late avant-garde composer John Cage couldn’t have had a better birthday homage thanks to MICHELLE SCHUMANN…” – Austin American Statesman

Featuring: Carla McElhaney & Michelle Schumann , prepared pianos

John Cage (1912-1992)

Considered by many as a prime pioneer in the innovation of music and sound, Cage turned classical composition on its ear with his unique style. For one night, Schumann and McElhaney will perform a pair of pianos, which will be doctored up with various objects including screws, bolts, rubber, wood, weather stripping, pencil erasers, and pennies; all placed in between the strings of the piano. The result? Two miraculous 10 fingered percussion ensembles with a bevy of bells, whistles, clinks, and thuds, sure to delight. This performance will be sure to offer audiences something unique and a little weird, but that’s why Austin is such a fitting place for this annual event.
