PROGRAM TO BE ANNOUNCED FROM THE STAGE

The Bad Plus will perform original compositions from the upcoming Fall 2012 release on Entertainment Music One tentatively titled “Made Possible”.

For the past 10 years The Bad Plus have created an uncompromising body of work by shattering musical convention. Rolling Stone called their amalgam of jazz, pop, rock and avant garde “about as badass as highbrow gets,” while The New York Times said the band is “better than anyone at mixing the sensibilities of post-‘60s jazz and indie rock.” Few jazz groups in recent memory have amassed such acclaim, and few have generated as much controversy while audaciously bucking musical trends.

String Quartet No. 1 in A Minor, Op. 7 | Bela Bartok
String Quartet in D Major, Op.44, No. 1 | Felix Mendelssohn

The JUPITER STRING QUARTET, formed in 2001, is a particularly intimate group, consisting of violinists Nelson Lee and Megan Freivogel, violist Liz Freivogel (older sister of Meg), and cellist Daniel McDonough (husband of Meg, brother-in-law of Liz). The quartet chose its name because Jupiter was the most prominent planet in the night sky at the time of its formation, and the astrological symbol for Jupiter resembles the number four. There are also musical references (for example, Holst’s The Planets, in which Jupiter is “the bringer of jollity”) that emphasize the connotations of happiness and strength associated with the Roman god Jupiter.

In 1961, the Quartet toured Australia, and in the late sixties, the U.S. Department of State sponsored the Quartet’s tours to Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Australia and New Zealand. By the late seventies, the Quartet had already performed in some 270 cities in 28 countries. The Quartet has continued to broadcast for radio in America (especially for WFMT-Chicago), in Europe (e.g. the BBC), and for television (concerts and educational programs for National Public Television).

The Quartet’s first teaching residency, 1952-1955, was at Northwestern University. In 1963, after many years of summer concerts at the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, the Quartet was invited to become Quartet-in-Residence, and has been resident there ever since.

This evening’s performance will be announced from the stage, giving the artists the opportunity to share the context of the program, and allowing the music to flow seamlessly from one genre to the next. The artists’ selection may be drawn from the following composers:

Stravinsky | Janacek | Herrmann | Arcade Fire | Radiohead | Mahavishnu
John McLaughlin Martinu | Cocteau Twins

“IF any artists were destined to collaborate, it was surely this pair. Matt Haimovitz, a thoughtful and passionate cellist, veered away from the straight-and-narrow career path of a child prodigy to pursue new audiences in coffeehouses and nightclubs. Christopher O’Riley, an accomplished pianist — and incidentally, the host of “From the Top,” a popular PBS and NPR series that showcases very young classical musicians — likewise spends as much time in rock clubs as in recital halls.” ~ Steve Smith, New York Times

Anyone who thinks the lines between classical and pop music are crisp and easily drawn is reckoning without the innovative spirit of cellist Matt Haimovitz and pianist Christopher O’Riley. ~ Joshua Kosmen, San Francisco Chronicle
